G. Network/Transport-IPX/SPX

What is it?
IPX/SPX is Netwares native protocol stack. The IPX portion resides at the network layer, while SPX is a transport-level protocol. IPX stands for Internetwork Packet Exchange. SPX stands for Sequenced Packet Exchange.

What does it do?
IPX is responsible for the delivery of message packets from sender to receiver. This may include routing packets through intermediate destinations. SPX supervises the packet delivery process, by verifying and acknowledging packet delivery. It also provides error-checking capability, and can force the re-transmission of messages that are not acknowledged, or that arrive garbled.

How is it used?
IPX/SPX provides the delivery services for Netware traffic on a LAN. It also provides control information for the network, such as routing information (Router Information
Protocol) and information about available services on the network (Service Advertising
Protocol). This is an integral part of the Netware operating system, and comes bundled with it.
