8. Network Management
C. HP Openview

What is it?
OpenView is a network management system developed by Hewlett-Packard. It was originally designed to run on aan UNIX-basedplatform and to manage TCP/IP networks. Newer versions have been developed that run on MS-Windows, and support has been provided for Netware SPX /IPX networks.

What does it do?
OpenView provides the following features: Discovery and Layout automatically finds and displays devices on the network. It displays a map of the topology of the network in a hierarchical view that allows the manager to zoom in or out on devices. A MIB Browser allows the manager to review the MIB parameters of manageable devices. A Graphing utility creates graphs of MIB counters such as error counts, packets received, etc.

The user interface for the system is called the OpenView Interconnect Manager. This is a graphic interface that allows the user to set up security, perform trend analysis on various network parameters, and monitor and control devices. It also includes Telnet capability to allow it to connect to, and configure, routers. It works in conjunction with the main HP OpenView code, which handles event monitoring and control, and network map management.

Lastly, in provides some special utilities specifically for HP networking devices, such as an utility for downloading configuration files for HP hubs or bridges. It also includes utilities that communicate with JetDirect HP printer interfaces.

How is it used?
OpenView is a widely used multivendor network management system. This is the network management system used by CompuCom to manage their internal network. OpenView provides good support for both TCP/IP and Netware environments.
