8. Network Management
E. IBM Lan NetView

What is it?
LAN NetView is a network management system developed by IBM for use with PC LANs. It is an outgrowth of IBMs NetView management system for host-based networks. It is designed to run on an OS/2-based management console. LAN NetView is optimized to run on IBM-based networks, although it has open systems capabilities through SNMP, CMIP, and DME (distributed management environment) support. (see section on SNMP)

What does it do?
The core of the NetView system is the NetView Manage software. This provides the user interface, and integrates other network management products. It provides the ability to track hardware and software configurations, displays a network topology map, and includes the management protocol (SNMP, CMIP) interfaces. Agents are provided to enable visibility to OS/2 and DOS workstations, as well as IBM applications such as LAN Server, IBM Database 2, Comm Manager/2, etc.

LAN NetView Monitor provides the ability to monitor and tune the network. It also provides graphing capability for network parameters. The NetView Fix utility provides fault isolation and management. It can be programmed to display error messages, page the LAN administrator, etc.. It also includes an advisor function that can provide recommendations for fixing a given problem. NetViews Tie utility connects this software with Network management systems running on IBM host computers, allowing a central management point for both the mainframe and PC network environments.

LAN NetView will support both IBM LAN Server and Netware operating systems, and provides some ability to manage servers in these environments.

How is it used?
LAN NetView is best suited for use in IBM environments. Many of the features of NetView are designed for OS/2 systems, applications, and networks. It also provides good support for integration with IBM host-based management systems. Support for industry standards such as SNMP network management protocols makes it possible to manage multivendor network hardware, and Netware support makes it applicable to a wider range of PC LANs.
